Review: Two Extra AF Jayjun Sheet Masks, Plus WTF Is Fine Dust?

Multi-Step Madness: Jayjun Anti-Dust Whitening Mask & Anti-Dust Therapy Mask

Jayjun Cosmetic is a Korean Skincare known for creating high-quality products and is famous for their excellent and indulgent sheet masks. I’ve tried many other Jayjun masks before, so I knew I was in for a treat! I simply couldn’t resist the fancy packaging and extra nature of these multi-step masks, so I thought I had to pick these up and review them for you all!

What Does Anti-Dust Mean, Anyway?

In case you haven’t heard, South Korea has been undergoing a pollution crisis that has skyrocketed over the course of the last few years and caused major public health concern. Specifically, Seoul suffers from high concentrations of fine dust particles, which are extremely small particles containing sulfur, carcinogens, metals, bacteria, and a whole bunch of other stuff that you don’t want in your body. Due to their size, the particles are able to reach the lungs, so it’s a big issue, so much so that the government issues fine-dust alerts to citizen’s mobile phones when concentrations hit dangerous levels. It’s for this reason that it’s not uncommon to see people walking the streets of Seoul in surgical masks. As a result, there has been growing concern among the Korean public of fine dust’s health outcomes, as well it’s effect on skin. Somewhat depressingly but unsurprisingly, K-Beauty brands have responded to this public health crisis by capitalizing on the trend and releasing anti-dust skincare lines. Now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s get on with the reviews!

Anti-Dust Whitening Mask

CosDNA Analysis

Notable Ingredients

Niacinamide (brightening & anti-aging), Hydroxyethyl Urea, Panthenol (A.K.A. Provitamin B5 for soothing & hydration), Pearl Powder & Extract (for brightening), Ginger Root Oil (antioxidant, i.e. fights free radicals), Rosemary Leaf Extract (anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory & anti-microbial), Centella Asiatica Extract (skin soothing), Propolis Extract (anti-bacterial & brightening).

There are other notable beneficial ingredients in the formula, but since they’re further down in the ingredients list, I have to assume they’re in relatively minute quantities and therefore deliver little skin benefits.

Potential Irritants

The mask has quite a lengthy ingredients list, so it does open up the possibility for irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin. It also contains denatured alcohol but as the 4th to last ingredient so I didn’t worry so much about it having a drying effect. In addition, contains artificial fragrance which can be irritating to some.

Material & Fit

Medium thickness cotton and super soft. The mask adhered to my face really well. So I was able to sit up straight or do whatever I fancy while wearing it without fear of it sliding off my face. The forehead area was way too long for my face (keep in mind, I have a smaller than average forehead). Every so often the material on the sides of my nose would lift off.  Also, the eye holes were on the smaller side.  Aside from those quirks, it fit quite nicely.

Scent

This mask contains artificial fragrance as the final ingredient, which is the case for most sheet masks. The scent is fresh and floral but not overpowering.

Essence

The essence is milky and viscous. The mask was hella juicy and drenched in essence upon opening. However, it wasn’t drippy while putting it on, which is a plus. No one likes a drippy sheet mask. Ew.

Wear-time

I wore the mask for about 50 minutes before it began drying out, which is quite impressive.

Immediate Results

After I removed the mask, a layer of milky essence still sat on top of my skin which I gently work into my face to be absorbed. Upon removal, my skin was noticeably brightened, softened and extremely moisturized. It left me with a nice glow as well!

Step 2: Anti-Dust Luster Ampule

Claims

“It is a sleeping pack highly enriched ampule that helps with skin brightening by lightening the color of melanin (their words, not mine) in the skin and makes the skin smooth and shiny.”

Ingredient Breakdown

Full IngredientsWater, Diglycerin, Butylene Glycol, Dimethicone, Niacinamide, Glycereth-26, Glycerin, Diethoxyethyl Succinate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Polysorbate 20, Saururus Chinensis Extract, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Oil, Pearl Extract, Pearl Powder, Ectoin, Zinc PCA, Chlorella Vulgaris/Lupinus Albus Protein Ferment, Nasturtium Officinale Flower/Leaf Extract, Echium Plantagineum Seed Oil, Cnidium Monnieri Fruit Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Solidago Virgaurea (Goldenrod) Extract, Pancratium Maritimum Extract, Sodium Polyacrylate, Alcohol Denat., PEG-10 Dimethicone, Polysilicone-11, Allantoin, Panthenol, Xanthan Gum, Caprylyl Glycol, Acorus Calamus Root Extract, Perilla Ocymoides Leaf Extract, Schizandra Chinensis Fruit Extract, Octyldodecanol, Octyldodecyl Oleate, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Tromethamine, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Titanium Dioxide, Disodium EDTA, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Seed Extract, Fragrance

Overall thoughts

First off, I recommend using little scissors to open the little packets otherwise its difficult to tear open by hand. The ampoule has a really thick texture, so I can understand why they describe it as a “sleeping pack”. It has a pretty pearlescent sheen and similar scent as the sheet mask, which doesn’t linger. The finish is non-tacky and it’s easily absorbed into the skin. However, despite the ampoule’s abundance of nutritious herbal extracts and oils, I didn’t notice really any improvement in hyper-pigmentation or even overall brightening. It didn’t find it to be particularly moisturizing or glow-inducing either.

Step 3: Anti-Dust Eyes Under Corrector

Claims

“It is a skin brightening and wrinkle care double-functional cosmetic that brightens up the dark skin around the eyes and by delivering nutrients deep into the skin, it makes the eye area tight.”

Overall Thoughts

This is a medium weight cream with a pale orange color. It is meant to brighten and tighten the underage area. I didn’t notice a brightening effect after first use but I maybe noticed a slight firming effect. There was plenty to use for more than one use, so I decanted the rest into a tiny jar and continued using it for the next week. It’s a solid eye cream, but nothing special. I didn’t notice brightening effects, but I have pretty gnarly genetic and allergy-induced dark circles. I have other eye creams that I find much more moisturizing, so I found myself longing to return to those. Anyway, after about a week, the cream dried up in the pot so I tossed it without much regret.

Next Morning Results

The next day, I woke up to soft and smooth skin. The day before I was having a “bad skin day”, with blotchiness and bumps galore, and just overall irritation. Following the night I used the mask and all the steps, I woke up to a much better skin day! My skin appared to be more even and less red. I can safely say that these effects were due to the mask and not the other steps since I continued to use the eye cream and ampoule for the next week and did not see similar results.

Anti-Dust Therapy Mask

Step 1: Anti-Dust Fresh Foam Cleanser

Claims

“It is a soft-textured cleanser that thoroughly removes air pollutants, fine dust and makeup residue stuck on your face with tiny bubbles and supplies ample moisture to prevent dryness.”

Ingredient Breakdown

Full Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Lauric Acid, Potassium Hydroxide, PEG-8, Myristic Acid, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Beeswax, Saururus Chinensis Extract, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Oil, Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract, Anemarrhena Asphodeloides Root Extract, Arctium Lappa Seed Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Forsythia Suspensa Fruit Extract, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Nelumbo Nucifera Seed Extract, Platycodon Grandiflorum Root Extract, Propolis Extract, Melia Azadirachta Flower Extract, Ectoin, Echium Plantagineum Seed Oil, Cnidium Monnieri Fruit Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Solidago Virgaurea (Goldenrod) Extract, Benzyl Glycol, Sodium Chloride, Propanediol, Butoxydiglycol, Dimethicone, Isohexadecane, Tocopheryl Acetate, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Stearyl Dimethicone, Polyquaternium-7, Raspberry Ketone, Steareth-21, 1,2-Hexanediol, PEG-40 Stearate, Butylene Glycol, Octyldodecanol, Octyldodecyl Oleate, Glyceryl Caprylate, Octanediol, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Alcohol Denat., Sodium Benzoate, Fragrance

pH Level: It fell between a 6.5-7 (neutral) according to my lab test strips, which although is not low-pH, is perfectly acceptable.

Overall Thoughts

Once mixed with water, the cleanser created a dense, creamy foam. The scent was light, fresh and soapy.
But soon, horror struck. While rinsing the cleanser off, I literally heard the “squeaks” rubbing up against my skin. So needless to say this cleanser was quite stripping. While toweling off, my skin wasn’t feeling exceptionally dry. But as I patted in my post-cleanse mist, my skin did have a rougher, drier texture than usual. I also noticed my skin drank up product quicker than usual. Needless to say, I won’t be finishing off the rest that was left in the pouch.

Step 2: Anti-Dust Therapy Mask

Ingredient Breakdown

Full IngredientsWater, Methylpropanediol, Glycerin, Glycereth-26, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Propanediol, Betaine, Hydroxyethyl Urea, Panthenol, Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract, Saururus Chinensis Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Oil, Anemarrhena Asphodeloides Root Extract, Arctium Lappa Seed Extract, Forsythia Suspensa Fruit Extract, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Nelumbo Nucifera Seed Extract, Platycodon Grandiflorum Root Extract, Propolis Extract, Solidago Virgaurea (Goldenrod) Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Echium Plantagineum Seed Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Ectoin, Octyldodecyl Oleate, Polyglutamic Acid, Octyldodeceth-16, Dimethicone, Hydroxyacetophenone, Isohexadecane, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Butylene Glycol, Carbomer, Tromethamine, Allantoin, Stearyl Dimethicone, Steareth-21, 1,2-Hexanediol, PEG-40 Stearate, Octyldodecanol, Pentylene Glycol, Beta-Glucan, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Glyceryl Caprylate, Octanediol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Cnidium Monnieri Fruit Extract, Disodium EDTA, Alcohol Denat., Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance

Notable Ingredients

The ingredients are very similar to the Whitening version, with the exclusion of Pearl. Therefore, the key beneficial ingredients are pretty much the same. One interesting ingredient unique to this mask is Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract, A.K.A. Peony Root Extract, which is used in Chinese Herbal Medicine for soothing and moisturizing dry, itchy skin.

The mask also features an abundance of herbal extracts, but since I’m no expert on herbal medicine, I cannot speak to their benefit. But just know that they’re probably good for your skin!

Potential Irritants

Again, denatured alcohol and fragrance may be an issue for some, so please check your sensitivities before use!

Material & Fit

As with the Whitening version, the material was incredibly soft and form-fitting. But this time in a fun, mint green shade!

Scent

Same scent as the other mask. Generically floral and non-offensive.

Essence

Again, the sheet was amply soaked in essence without being drippy.  The essence was also milky white, but somewhat runnier and less creamy in texture compared to the Whitening mask.

Wear-time

I wore this for a solid 40 minutes. So it soaked up a bit quicker than the Whitening mask but still, pretty great!

Immediate Results

Once removed, there was a decent amount of essence left behind to work into the skin. My skin was left with an awesome glow! There was slightly tacky finish. This mask didn’t reduce redness but didn’t flare it up either, which is often the case with many sheet masks I try. Overall, my skin felt bouncy, supple, and hella moisturized. Loved it!

Step 3: Anti-Dust Intensive Cream

We’re in the home stretch, guys! The final step of the Therapy Mask was a rich cream.

Claims

“The nice cream texture helps it to easily sink into the skin and sooth irritated skin from harmful external environment and it keeps the skin hydrated by creating a moisture barrier on the skin.”

Ingredient Breakdown

Full IngredientsWater, Butylene Glycol, Dimethicone, Cetearyl Alcohol, Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Betaine, Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Butylene Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate, Sodium Methyl Stearoyl Taurate, Glycerin, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Methyl Trimethicone, Glycereth-26, Glyceryl Stearate, Propanediol, Cetearyl Glucoside, Behenyl Alcohol, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate, Isohexadecane, Saururus Chinensis Extract, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Stearyl Dimethicone, Echium Plantagineum Seed Oil, Octyldodecyl Oleate, Steareth-21, Pentylene Glycol, Polyglutamic Acid, PEG-40 Stearate, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Beta-Glucan, Octanediol, Glyceryl Caprylate, Ectoin, Cnidium Monnieri Fruit Extract, Solidago Virgaurea (Goldenrod) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Benzyl Glycol, Butoxydiglycol, Tromethamine, Octyldodecanol, Raspberry Ketone, 1,2-Hexanediol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Alcohol Denat., Fragrance

Overall Thoughts

This cream is very thick and ultra-dense with a fluffy texture. Feels silicone-y (hello, dimethicone is the 3rd ingredient), which creates an occlusive barrier over your skin, as promised. It does feel a bit stuffy, though, and so I would limit this to nighttime use.

Next Morning Results

The effects the next day weren’t as dramatic as with the whitening mask. My face was a bit flushed (this happens often when I wake up and most likely not due to the mask) but a nice glow still remained. My skin still felt smooth and soft for the rest of the day.

Final Thoughts

This sheet masks from Jayjun are simply gorgeous to look at and created a very luxurious experience! That being said, the actual sheet masks themselves, and not the other steps, are the real stars of the show. Jayjun is a brand known for its high-quality masks, and it definitely lived up to that standard with these masks. The results are dramatic and long-lasting (for a sheet mask, so the results roll over into the next day). I just wish these masks were sold as a single step and maybe a dollar cheaper. Then I would definitely stock up! Still, it is totally worth giving these masks (and all Jayjun masks) a try.
